DAY 1: MONTREAL / LA
GRANDE /
GREAT WHALE RIVER
This morning we fly from Montreal to La Grande. From the plane we can view the massive La
Grande Dam and Reservoir which was built 20 years ago as part to the James Bay I
Hydro-Electric Project. The Great Whale River Dams, if they are ever built, will be part of
the James Bay II project. In the afternoon we board a float plane and fly 60 miles inland,
past rugged canyons, waterfalls and lakes to our launching point on the Great Whale River
whose water is so pristine that you can drink directly from it.
DAYS 2-5: GREAT WHALE
RIVER
For 5 day, in the company of Cree hosts, Vera and Jimmy George, we run Grand Canyon-size
rapids, marvel at the stunning sub-arctic scenery of granite, stunted trees and
brilliantly colored lichen and come to understand and appreciate a land, a culture, and
their five thousand year bond. Nights will be spent in native Cree camps with teepees and
a sweat lodge where we will feast on fresh trout and other Cree foods. Cree customs,
stories and language will be an integral part of this journey.
DAY 5: GREAT WHALE RIVER
/ MONTREAL
This morning we are met by the float plane which transports us back to La Grande where we
transfer to the flight south, arriving in Montreal in the afternoon.
