WORLD'S
WILDEST MOST COMFORTABLE RIVER TRIP
The challenging nature of the
Futaleufu makes it impractical to use heavy, unwieldy oar
rafts to carry baggage downriver the way a typical multi-day
trip is run. Many rafting companies solve this problem by
utilizing a few primitive access roads to cover a different
stretch of river every day with the group returning each
night to the same base camp or hotel.
Earth River's philosophy has always been to get our guests
as far away as possible from roads, motorized vehicles and
civilization. To accomplish this on the Futaleufu, we purchased
and fully outfitted three remote camps totaling over 1,500
wild acres. These camps make it possible for us to offer
a continuous wilderness journey down the river. We are the
only company offering such a top to bottom multi-camp experience.
Though wild and remote, these camps are quite comfortable.
As David Noland wrote in his book, Travels Along the Edge;
"Earth River's camps are about as plush as you can
get and still call it camping." Amenities from a professional
masseuse and chef to riverside hot tubs and tree houses
were added in such way as to not impact the wild nature
of the river and expedition.
The upper Futaleufu canyon is indisputably the wildest,
most remote section of the river. Rather than spending one
day and no nights in this wondrous area, as a "day
trip" approach mandates, Earth River spends four days
and three nights there. The upper canyon includes the river's
most exotic and diverse camp; the Earth River Cave Camp.
This exclusive 1,000 acre Camp with its river-carved stone
hot tubs, stone sleeping shelters, dramatic cliff dwellings,
translucent blue lake, granite climbing tower and renowned
challenge cirque- all centered around Zeta, the most spectacular
rapid on the river, is often mentioned as the highlight
of the trip.
As American Way (American Airlines Magazine) reported, "The
Earth River Cave Camp is a natural, adult-size playground.
Like a grown-up version of a tree fort, it's the type of
never- never land that would make Peter Pan and the Lost
Boys jealous. " William Fair from New York City, summed
it up saying, " What a shame it would have been to
race down the river and miss the cave camp, stone hot tubs,
tyrolean traverse, zip line, tower climb and other unique
features you've added."
Our other exclusive camps include the Earth River tree house
camp with a 50 foot deep lake, surrounded by old growth
forest with spectacular tree houses for sleeping and gorgeous
Campo Mapu Leufu with over 2 miles of privately owned cliffs,
forest and beaches, a 16 person hand made cypress hot tub
perched on a 100 foot cliff with breath taking views of
granite spires rising from the turquoise river. All three
camps are wild and isolated, have hot tubs, spring fed ponds
or lakes for swimming and kayaking (lessons) and tributary
streams with falls and deep pools for bathing.
This wilderness, multi-camp approach on the Futaleufu helps
Earth River keep its promise of offering the "world's
wildest most comfortable river trip".
